SLADE HOTEL

The Slade Entry

CONCEPT IDEATION

The local area of Camperdown is one of the most eclectic areas in Sydney, with a strong music, art and cultural scene. Each night music, comedy and performing acts from around the world perform nightly at the Enmore Theatre, a short walk away from the site. The area also draws lots of people to it with it’s vast number and diversity of bars and restaurants.

The target market for the hotel are affluent mature aged couples who are escaping the routine of their lives with a fun and hedonistic escape at the hotel.

Liv drew from the 1970’s music genre Glam Rock and its bold, daring androgynous performers and characters to create the hotel’s concept, which embodies a diverse, creative and unexpected design.

Welcome to The Slade Hotel.

BEDROOM DESIGNS

The 12 bedrooms at The Slade have all been designed around the concept of Clash. Colourful, energetic and what on paper shouldn’t go together but in actuality do – the design seeks to reflect the Glam Rock vibe.

The Large Double bedroom uses an orange/blue complementary colour scheme, with a neutral black and white base and includes many different luxurious materials for guests to enjoy.

SHAG BAR

Shag Bar is a cocktail bar, lounge and entertainment space. It is part of The Slade hotel and is designed around the concept of Elevated 70’s. Using a colour scheme of yellow, orange, brown and highlights of electric blue, the bar has an intimate feel and has been designed for visitors to stay awhile and linger through the night.

GLAM ROCK COSTUME EXHIBITION

The hotel’s Pop Up needed to attract new clientele to the hotel and be a unique experience for visitors. The brief was to design the Pop Up using 2 shipping containers (and plenty more materials).

Designing around the “Glam Rock at Scale” concept, Liv created an exhibition space to showcase the many costumes from the Glam Rock era of music.  Playing with scale she created a giant 2 story high figure to attract visitors into the exhibition whilst reflecting the larger than life performers of the Glam Rock Era. Where the shipping containers are used, they remain unchanged, except above the entrance where there is a shining parasitic chrome form, evoking the unexpectedness of the overall concept.

This Pop Up is designed to sit in Wheeler Place, Newcastle’s central cultural hub, chosen to attract locals for their next Sydney stay, as well as showcase to a music loving city the fabulousness of Glam Rock.

GEORGE STREET CAFE

George Street Cafe in Redfern was developed from a study of precedent work that used the design principles of; line and repetition, timber materiality;  organic curved forms and golden neutral hues.

The cafe seats up to 18 people and is accessed from it’s own entry to the street or via the reception area adjacent. The large viewing window looks out to the furniture showroom beyond (accessed through the reception area). The design aims to create a relaxed and tranquil space using those principles from the precedent projects.
